I’m at work, reading the daily AIDS news.  It’s often depressing, especially the news from the third world.  But it was a Colorado State Senator who pissed me off most today.

COLORADO:   “Senator Opposes HIV Testing for Pregnant Women”
Associated Press     (02.25.09):: Colleen Slevin

The Colorado Senate on Wednesday approved a bill requiring physicians to offer pregnant women HIV screening in their first trimester. Sens. Lois Tochtrop (D-Thornton) and Josh Penry (R-Grand Junction) sponsored the measure, SB 179, which allows the women to decline testing. Tochtrop said the bill aims to help prevent mother-to-child HIV infections.

TR’s note: Modern medicine does a terrific job of preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV.  But the doctor needs to know if the mother is infected.

The Senate vote was unanimous save for Sen. Dave Schultheis (R-Colorado Springs).

You might think this guy was taking a principled, keep-government-out-of-the-doctor’s-office stance here.  But no.  Here’s his reasoning:

“We do things constantly to try to remove the negative consequences of poor behavior, unacceptable behavior, quite frankly,” he said.

Translation: “Transmitting the AIDS virus to her (probably illegitimate) baby is just what she and her little bastard deserve, that slut.”

Sen. Jennifer Veiga (D-Denver) objected to Schultheis’ claims, including those implying that HIV stemmed mainly from sexual promiscuity. Veiga was also upset that no Republicans, especially Minority Leader Penry, spoke out against what Schultheis had said.

Penry said he backed the bill to protect babies but that it was not his responsibility to weigh in on the opinions of other senators.

Following the 32-1 vote, the bill advanced to the House.

Would you vote for that guy?

  1. How someone got HIV is not something for politicians or health care workers to speculate on.  You don’t hear legislators proposing to end routine testing of pregnant women for Hep B, which, like HIV can be contracted through IV drug use or sexual contact but also through other means such as blood transfusions.  We need to get over this fixation on HIV as some sort of brand of immorality.

  2. Colorado has some real winners. that’s why i was so happy and surprised they went blue during the election. sort of related, maybe, but i heard on the news last night they are trying to pass a law here which would require anyone having an abortion to view an ultrasound of the fetus before having the abortion.

  3. Another example of a right-wing Republican nutcase.   Luckily, they are now the minority party but obviously they’re still out there spreading insanity whenever they have the chance.

  4. Vote for him?   No, but I think the more idiots that espouse stupid uninformed and ludicrous positions, the better off we leftys are.  I mean our views sound positively normal compared to punishing unborn babies for the health or lack of health of their mothers.Dope.
